Vrijheidssoep & muziek - 5 mei 2026

Op dinsdag 5 mei is het Bevrijdingsdag en vieren we dat wij in Nederland in vrijheid mogen leven. Dat doen we door samen aan tafel te gaan tijdens een Haagse Vrijheidsmaaltijd. Omdat nieuwe mensen ontmoeten je blik verruimt en samen eten verbindt. Wij organiseren dit jaar ook een Haagse Vrijheidsmaaltijd. Schuif je bij ons aan op Bevrijdingsdag? 

Neem plaats aan tafel op het hoogkoor onder de gewelven en luister naar muziek van fluitiste Inta Paula Brinke, het Eastern Periphery trio en de Indiase componist Edelgeist. Muziek die raakt aan de kern van Bevrijdingsdag. Wat betekent vrijheid om je te uiten, vrijheid om muziek te maken, vrijheid om te delen? Hoe klinkt vrijheid? Het muziekprogramma is samengesteld met studenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag.

Het muziekprogramma is samengesteld met studenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, met een centrale rol voor compositiestudent Tanishq Bhat, die componeert onder de naam Edelgeist. Het volledig akoestische concert wordt gevolgd door een interview waarin de componisten en uitvoerenden vertellen over vrijheid in muziek en compositie.

De Letse fluitiste Inta Paula Briņķe (2003) is een gepassioneerde en nieuwsgierige
musicus en studeert aan de Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music en aan het
Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag.

Inta trad op en nam deel aan competities in heel Europa. Zij ontving onder meer
erkenning van het Letse Ministerie van Cultuur, een speciale juryprijs bij de Latvian
Young Flutist Competition en de titel Outstanding Laureate bij de World’s Best
Musicians competition. In 2025 opende zij het Huntenkunst Festival in Nederland
en sloot zij zich aan bij het Jong Metropole Orchestra.

Eastern Periphery is een trio, gevormd door studenten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag en het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Het ensemble brengt eigen composities en bijzondere arrangementen waarin jazz, Turkse, Balkan- en Indiase muziektradities samenkomen. Soms klinken ook invloeden door van spirituele muziek, funk, techno en latin/flamenco. Geworteld in ritmische intensiteit en interculturele dialoog zoekt Eastern Periphery het snijvlak op tussen traditie en hedendaagse expressie.

Edelgeist is het alter ego van componist Tanishq Bhat. Zijn projecten bestaan niet enkel uit muziek, maar zijn een totaalkunstwerk: in meeslepende performances komen choreografie, zang, instrumentale uitvoering en narratief samen in één expressieve vorm. Door uitgebreide instrumentale technieken te combineren met een rijke harmonische taal verkent Edelgeist de grenzen tussen klank, beweging en verhaal.

De vrijheidssoep (veganistisch) wordt geserveerd in de kerkzaal van de Grote Kerk. Na het muziekprogramma volgt, net als vorig jaar, een Open Gedichtenpodium. Bezoekers worden uitgenodigd een gedicht mee te nemen dat aansluit bij het thema ‘vrijheid’. Zo inspireren we elkaar en keren we huiswaarts met een gevulde maag, een hoofd vol ideeën en een gevoel van verbinding.

On Tuesday 5 May it is Liberation Day, when we celebrate that we are able to live in freedom in the Netherlands. We mark this by gathering around the table for a Hague Freedom Meal — because meeting new people broadens your perspective and sharing food brings people together. This year we are also hosting a Hague Freedom Meal. Will you join us on Liberation Day? 

Take a seat at the table in the high choir beneath the vaulted ceilings and listen to music by flutist Inta Paula Brinke, the Eastern Periphery trio and the Indian composer Edelgeist. Music that touches the core of Liberation Day: what does the freedom to express yourself mean, the freedom to make music, the freedom to share? What does freedom sound like? The music programme has been curated together with students from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague.

The music program has been put together with students from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, with a central role for composition student Tanishq Bhat, who composes under the name Edelgeist. The fully acoustic concert is followed by an interview in which the composers and musicians talk about freedom in music and composition.

The Latvian flutist Inta Paula Briņķe (2003) is a passionate and curious musician and studies at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Inta has performed and taken part in competitions throughout Europe. Among other things, she received recognition from the Latvian Ministry of Culture, a special jury prize at the Latvian Young Flutist Competition and the title Outstanding Laureate at  the World’s Best Musicians competition. In 2025 she opened the Huntenkunst Festival in the Netherlands and joined the Jong Metropole Orchestra.

Eastern Periphery is a trio formed by students of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The ensemble performs original compositions and distinctive arrangements in which jazz, Turkish, Balkan and Indian musical traditions come together. At times influences of spiritual music, funk, techno and latin/flamenco can also be heard. Rooted in rhythmic intensity and intercultural dialogue, Eastern Periphery seeks the intersection between tradition and contemporary expression.

Edelgeist is the alter ego of composer Tanishq Bhat. His projects consist not only of music, but are a total work of art: in immersive performances choreography, singing, instrumental performance and narrative come together in one expressive form. By combining extended instrumental techniques with a rich harmonic language, Edelgeist explores the boundaries between sound, movement and story.

The freedom soup (vegan) and music program is served on the high choir of the Grote Kerk. After the music program, just like last year, there will be an Open Poetry Stage. Visitors are invited to bring a poem that relates to the theme ‘freedom’. In this way we inspire one another and return home with a full stomach, a head full of ideas and a sense of connection.
